Diabetes Prevention: Are You at Risk?

 

Majority of the chronic conditions and illness that Americans face are not only self-induced but preventable. In particular Diabetes (Type ll) disproportionately effects minorities such as African Americans, Indian Americans and Hispanics. For example, these ethnic groups are diagnosed almost 2 x more than others  Americans. (American Diabetes Association). In addition, many people live with diabetes and don’t even know they have it so as you can imagine the numbers are likely even more drastic.

In simple terms, when you have diabetes- insulin which is responsible for pushing glucose (sugar) inside the body, becomes resistant and doesn’t work as well which leads to the glucose staying in the bloodstream= high blood sugar. Poor lifestyle behaviors such as being a couch potato and or consuming a poor diet play a major role in this condition; however there are other contributing factors. Uncontrolled diabetes can carry major consequences such as heart disease, poor wound healing, visual changes, amputation, nerve damage, kidney damage etc.

But wait- taking action will yield positive results! With a little initiative and effort, you can be on your way to a healthier you, minus diabetes! Remember, prevention is key!

  • Inactivity
  • Poor Diet
  • High Sugar Intake
  • Family History of Diabetes
  • High Blood Pressure
  • High Blood Sugar
  • Overweight
  • Gestational Diabetes (during pregnancy)

 PREVENTION:

  • Get active– EXERCISE!! (30 minutes a day of moderate or vigorous exercise)
  • Decrease the amount of high fat, high carb foods (fried foods, fast food etc.)
  • Decrease Sugar Intake
  • Stop Smoking
  • Lose Weight
  • Monitor Blood Pressure Regularly
